About Dan

Dan Dearing, 14, of East Yorkshire has completed two full seasons in the Motul Ohvale UK Cup. Having only learnt to ride a motorcycle in June 2020, it has been a fast-paced learning experience for Dan, but he has loved every minute of it.

When he's not racing, Dan enjoys spending time with friends, mountain biking, mechanics, and is an avid fan of Moto GP, and British Superbikes, as well as road racing.

The Motul Ohvale UK Cup

The Ohvale UK Cup was started in 2020, by motorbike racing legend, British Superbike (BSB) rider, and Isle of Man TT lap record holder, Peter Hickman.

Peter is driven by a passion for helping develop and promote young motorcycle racing talent here in the UK, and to this end, the Ohvale UK Cup is for riders between 8 and 15 years of age. The bikes are either Automatic transmission, or four-speed Manual, with 4-stroke petrol engines.

The Cup is a British championship, heading to all parts of the UK, utilising kart tracks including Pembrey in Wales, Ellough Park in Norfolk, Rowrah in Cumbria, and Lydd down in Kent.

Race weekends consist of a practice day on a Friday, practice and qualifying on a Saturday followed by a warm-up session and three races on a Sunday - it's a packed schedule.

The bikes must be kept standard, which means the racing is all about rider talent, and not how deep parents' pockets are. The Ohvale GP bikes are real race machines and can top speeds of over 85mph - fast - particularly when the racing takes place on go kart tracks.

Peter Hickman has committed a lot of time and effort to the Cup, and as well as devoting his personal time, has also arranged for instruction for the young racers from British Superbike, Moto GP, and road racing riders, as well as British Minibikes trainers, and seasoned members of the Motorcycle Media, on and off the track, encompassing safety procedures, race craft, and media training.

With the championship extended to 110cc, 160cc, and 190cc for the 2022 summer season, it's an exciting time for young British talent.

Big brands such as Motul Oil, SBS Braking Systems, Pirelli Tyres, and British brand Reactive Parts have all signed-up to help the Championship, supporting riders with not only products, but also podium and championship bonus'.

Racing CV

In Dan's first full year of racing, he progressed quickly, to become a competitive rider, and well-liked in the paddock. Dan won the Riders' Choice Trophy, for the 2020 summer season, and talks passionately about The Cup:

"The first year was a steep learning curve for me, getting used to a clutch and gears, cornering, and breaking techniques, as well as race-craft. I'm learning all the time and getting quicker with every session I ride. Winning the Riders' Choice Cup was a real highlight in 2020, but I've also met some awesome people from all over the country and been lucky enough to be coached not only by Peter Hickman, but by a lot of famous bike racers from all over the world."

Following a vast improvement in his racing abilities over 2020, Dan finished 5th out of 15 riders in the 2020/21 winter season, and 10th in the 2021 summer season, with an increased field of 20 riders, which has grown from the 16 riders (pictured below), who took part in the 2020 season.

Following his first race of 2021, Dan moved to the 160cc class, and also gained his ACU racing licence, which will allow him to get practice at bigger circuits, on his Kawasaki Ninja 300, with a view to joining the ACU Team Green Junior Cup from 2023.

Alongside the Ohvale UK Cup, Dan also competed in the FIM Mini GP World Series, racing at Cadwell Park in a support race for the British Superbike round, as well as Silverstone, as part of the Moto GP meeting. This series is part of the FIM initiative to unify and standardise youth GP racing around the world, and is promoted by MSVR, governed by the ACU, and sponsored by Pirelli, and Ohvale UK.

2022, and beyond

2022 got off to a great start for Dan, with him finishing in third place overall in the winter championship, and kicking-off the 2022 summer season with a strong performance at Teesside Autodrome in the new Ohvale 190cc Cup.

With big names in the racing world backing the Ohvale UK Cup - Peter Hickman, the series founder, as well as Sylvain Guintoli, James Hillier, and Tommy Bridewell - the Cup receives a lot of media attention, with all races televised live through British Minibikes' YouTube channel, and promoted through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter by Peter Hickman's Marketing Team. The clip below is from the UK's best-selling weekly motorcycle publication, Motorcycle News ("MCN"). Dan is pictured on the left, following the 2020 summer season awards ceremony.

Dan is working hard to secure personal sponsorship from key companies, to help with the cost of tyres, race entries, and fuel for the coming season, but more importantly to act as key partners in his racing career.

Dan has recently had his bike painted white, and has new matching leathers, both of which are ready to be adorned with sponsors' branding.
